Heritage Impact Assessment

A heritage impact assessment is a comprehensive report designed to assess the potential impact to the significance of any designated and non-designated heritage assets that may be affected by a development proposal. This includes both buried and upstanding archaeological remains.

The core methodology for heritage impact assessments is similar to desk-based assessments in that it includes the research of archaeological and historical datasets and a walkover survey. However this study goes further by fully examining the setting of the site with relation to significant heritage assets in the environs. This includes exploring the visual relationships between heritage assets through viewshed analysis and digital modelling as well as investigating less tangible aspects of setting such as historic associations and patterns of use.

The combined results of the assessment is used to consider the extent and degree to which the site and wider historic environment might be affected by a development proposal, and serve as a signpost for designers and decision-takers.
